A Pair of Peridot Pals Play

Girls just want to have fun

I come home in the morning light
M
y mother says when you gonna live your life right
Oh mother dear we are not the fortunate ones

And girls they want to have fun

Oh girls just want to have fun

Cyndi Lauper

On Sunday, Dogust 1, as Liam stayed home celebrating his third birthday
I made my way to a city day celebrating shared August birthdays with a dear friend. That is where the title word Peridot comes in.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peridot
That would be the green stone assigned to August, loved by me, despised by my friend. See what you think, my jewelry modeled by our Vermont Teddy bear
there are many peridots there
designed by Jacgues Hemsi for me for this new decade birthday in a new decade 2010

I was, as usual taking the LIRR in to NYC . I chose to subway up to Lincoln Center, our first destination. We are seeing a play there. Not sure why I did not walk, I think the threat of rain and higher than usual sandals. I arrived at W66th Street stop and emerged on my favorite trickster street Broadway, doing its devious, hypotenusing again, crossing Columbus, trying to go east. But Lincoln Center is so big, that even Broadway cannot lead me astray this time.

I search out the theater. There are many venues in Lincoln Center, many arenas for performances, outdoor sitting for displays, for meeting. Of course, the fountain. I find the theater and with an hour to wait decide to go to Starbucks at Broadway. I get my latte easily (sometimes there is a problem with the crowd control). I walk back to Lincoln Center complex and find a huge outdoor seating area. I join the group who most likely are waiting for any one of the three plays or concerts or operas starting at 3PM. I have the NY times, a book on Buddhism (from which I can only read one page at a time, only on a trip to the city, and only one time in a week).
Why? Each thought is too big for my brain and I respect each concept too much to flip through.
I have my latte, a great perch from which to people watch. and time flies.

My friend texts, she has landed, we are meeting inside. I gather my belongings and move off the sitting area. I begin walking and suddenly I lose my balance and know that I will fall. One hand has a latte, each shoulder has a bag, I am suddenly off kilter, wobbly and might be looking at the pavement quickly. But no. I do what I term an upward fall in place. That is when everything flies up, and your body struggles mightily to stay erect and does, but with consequences. My latte shoots up onto my face and a second eruption soaks my shoulder, my ankle twists a bit, and then it is over like a mini quake. I am still standing. The damage- wet face, latte shoulder, shaky ankle. I continue walking and looking at the ground as if there is a giant crevice. I cop this attitude to alert all watching that none of that was due to any thing I did. No worries.
Hey, It is NYC, no one cares.

The play - The Grand Manner
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/20/theater/20gurney.html

The play is okay. The real treat is Kate Burton, especially the last scene, and the company of my pal as well as roomy seats and no too big heads in front of us. Add the upper scaleness of Lincoln Center and the culture I feel and it all is a plus.

The dinner Perilla's
http://www.perillanyc.com/

The restaurant is Harold Dieterle's, winner of Top Chef, the first season. He is from Long Island. Peridot Pal and I are both Top Chef aficionados and hope to see Harold.

We decide on the Summer Prix Fixe menu and here are our choices in words and pix and unintentionally mixed fonts

Appetizer
Hearts of palm and Bibb salad
if you are a foodie read on-manchego cheese
, mango and toasted macadamia nut vinaigrette-
how creative and all ingredients complimenting each other

Entree
Sauteed Skate Wing-quinoa, wood ears, heirloom tomatoes, sweet and sour eggplant basil sauce
astonishing!

Side-Farro risotto, artichoke confit, parmesan and chili grape salad
OMG (that is from me)

Desserts local blueberry crisp-almond streusel and ginger ice cream
sorbets, peach, strawberry, plum all luscious

No Harold. No matter.

I arrived home at NHP station around 9:30. Met by the boys, Paul and Liam. Happy to have had a pawfect boy day-Liam watches Paul plating dinner in the Top Chef kitchen

And I was happy to have had a pawfect peridot pal day.

All birthdays celebrated in a Grand Manner, and the new decade birthday celebrations to continue.
A little change in Cyndi's lyrics to best describe our experience.

Girls just want to have fun
I come home in the morning light
My mother says when you gonna live your life right

Oh mother dear
we are the fortunate ones
And girls they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun

Happy Third Birthday Liam

How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf)
The one with the waggley tail
How much is that doggie in the window (arf, arf)
I do hope that doggie's for sale

Patti Page Lyrics

Liam will celebrate his third birthday 8/01/10
How do we know? Well, we adopted Liam on 01/01/08 (for number people this might be intriguing, all the same numbers in different positions). Hmmm.
We were told he was about 5 months old. We counted back and decided 8/01/07 would be his birthday. And guess what, North Shore Animal League also decided that all adopted pets would have that same designated birthday since many are rescues and their date of birth a mystery.

quote from NSAL website:

http://www.animalleague.org/feature/2010/dogust-the-first-2010.html#attend
Pet lovers at North Shore Animal League America acknowledge that actual birth dates of most rescued dogs are unknown.

So to give these wonderful animals their much deserved recognition, the Animal League has declared the first day of the eight month-August 1st-as DOGust the 1st, a universal birthday for shelter and rescued dogs everywhere.

Every dog will have his day. Please help us celebrate man's best friend!

Liam lamenting missing party in this next pic

Liam had wanted to celebrate with his adopted buddies see photo of DOGust 1st partybut this year we are booked the entire weekend. What could be more important than celebrating DOGust 1st at North Shore?

Is it Chelsea's wedding?
Many of you have asked if our commitment is to Chelsea's wedding, July 31. It is known that we frequently take mini trips to Rhinebeck and stay at the Beekman Arms and in fact are going up the week after. We have other commitments that supersede the Clinton wedding. I know Chelsea will miss us doing "the chicken dance."
I am sure that we will be regaled with many Clinton stories during our stay in August.

But back to the birthday boy. Liam misses his official 3rd birthday party. How do we make it up to him?
Liam will be taking two consecutive vacations at his favorite vacay resort Best In Show http://www.bestinshowpetresort.com/ Not one, but two vacations. Two separate chances for him to shine, learn and achieve. His report cards are always outstanding and we expect more of the same this time. He is a show off Leo who loves attention. Always mistaken for a puppy and he takes full advantage by licking folks, jumping on visitors and begging any and all for a tummy tickle

Liam shares his birthday card with LiamLicks readers.

Worthy to mention
Liam is entered in the Regis and Kelly summer dog fun contest http://bit.ly/9VKJPe
Running 8/2/10-8/6/10
so if you see him on the show give a holla aroooooooooooooooooooooooo
this is his entry photo

This just might be the hottest July EVER in NY history. We will know when our weather maven, Kevin Grogan, makes his announcement next week.

BTW HB to Kevin another DOGust 1st birthday celebrant born 08/01/81.
There are those same numbers again. "Play it Sam"

Woof, woof
are you lookin' at me?

The Home Teams/Split family

In the heat wave, Liam has learned cooling off involves keeping his tongue hanging

It has been happening for a while, this split in the family baseball loyalty between the Yankees and the Mets. During off season it is not so evident, as there are no games, just some stories here and there. No live games to haggle over. You see, Paul is a Met fan and I am a Yankee fan. Liam is straddling the slippery slope of loyalty to both parents.
I documented more of this in my blog story, dated 08/13/09 where I explored, explained and justified my reason for going to a Met game at Citi Field
http://liamlicks.blogspot.com/2009_08_09_archive.html

Now this year I have a new challenge. I must get with watching both Yankee and Met games.
Liam hears a lot. Dog hearing is at least 4x what human hearing is and he hears that couples who spend time together stay together. So Liam wants an intact family unit. In his mind this means that we have to watch the Yankee/Met games together.
Paul does watch both, as most Met fans do. Why both? All Met fans love watching the Yankees, hating them the entire time they watch, hoping they lose and rejoicing in any bad calls and bad play.
They love the Mets because they might just win a game and simply because they are NOT the Yankees.
I have not been able to watch both teams, because I have not been able to espouse Paul's position of hating the opposition. Up 'til now the Mets are a YAWN. They do not even have a Captain!
Met Yawn illustrated by Liam next pic

Liam wants to bring us together in our game watching, so he did some research on how Mommy Carol and Daddy Paul come to our preferences. A brief family history of our connection with the teams:

Carol
History with Mets

Worked at Shea Stadium during college
Switched to Mets during mid 80's when she noticed Keith Hernandez #17
Was a crazed fan during their 1986 series
Switched back to Yankees after Keith retired

History with Yanks
Loved Mickey Mantle #7 as a child and all the Yankee teams of the 50's, 60's
saw the Mick play "live" in person
has been to Mickey's NYC restaurant
Bought a Ford Focus- Sawyer a.k.a. James Ford- Jeter is a Ford Spokesperson

Paul
History with Mets
National League fan because his father was
so naturally became a Met fan
BTW Carol's father was also a National League fan-Giants

History with Yankees

Likes to hate them
Called Derek's famous courageous dive into the stands "showboating"
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/09/22/60minutes/main880059.shtml
Has been to Mickey's NYC restaurant
Bought a Ford Focus- Sawyer a.k.a. James Ford- Jeter is a Ford Spokesperson

Liam

No history with either, but

He harbors dreams of sitting with Keith in the broadcast booth since that involves barking (game analysis) and napping
next pic- Liam's dream of Keith and him in the broadcast booth-

Move over Jerry Seinfeld

Liam loves naps and Keith took a short one during a commercial break recently as did Liam
http://metspolice.com/2010/05/10/keith-hernandez-falls-asleep-during-game-video/

and Liam loves to leap in the air like Derek Jeter

Liam is a Yankee/Met game dog

I have considered all Liam's research and I agree with Liam.

Although, Keith is no longer at first base, I can have him back now by watching the Mets, trying to catch a glimpse of him in the broadcast booth. Awake or asleep he is still handsome, smart, and funny.
Best of both worlds. I can have the Yankees and Derek on the field and Keith in the booth for the Mets

Liam can have both parents together on the couch.
Liam makes room on the couch for his parents for the Yankee or Met game

Little Pig

Liam maintaining his new weight of 35 pounds, half pound gain

Boy you're gonna carry that weight, carry that weight for a long time
Boy you're gonna carry that weight, carry that weight for a long time

from Golden Slumbers-The Beatles

Restaurant week http://www.nycgo.com/restaurantweek?cid=nycgo_restaurantweek_sem_google_=new+york+city+restaurants+week
found us heading to Maialino's downtown on 22nd and Lexington. Did I once again get fooled by the trickster street Broadway which dissects Manhattan? uptown it is on the west side, downtown on the east. Yes, but only briefly. I had it down this time- I had my google walking directions and all I had to do was walk from Penn Station down Broadway, make a couple of tums and there I would be, at the Gramercy Park Hotel, home of Danny Meyer's new trattorial treasure, Maialino, meaning little pig.http://www.maialinonyc.com/
I was not doing the walking route though, as we had sudden soaking ferocious storms on Tuesday and Wednesday appeared to have the same threat or promise depending on your point of view.
So I subwayed down and emerged onto Broadway having no idea which way to turn.
But I have acquired some wisdom from my previous "lost on Broadway" debacles oft depicted in this blog. I asked a doorman and several passersby which way was Lex-all pointed to the exact opposite direction my body wanted to take. I trusted them (sort of) but I kept asking folks as I walked "til I saw Lexington Street sign. Being farsighted as I am, is only good for seeing distant street signs in NYC. My eyes confirmed I was walking in the right direction way before the word "Lexington" was visible to most walkers.

I arrived first, pic next looking towards left as one enters the GPH shows Maialino's entrance from the lobby and I was loving the lobby which seemed like a castle, and a church with candles, burning fireplace, yes, it is heat wave, but so what. Atmosphere.
I found a high and long red velvet bench and sat on it, my legs dangling. I felt like I was waiting for confession, the Catholic school girl always lurking just beneath the surface.

I was drawn to a painting above the fireplace which I took to be a Botero, he being the Colombian artist who paints porco -like figures. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernando_Botero
This painting made me smile, as it enhanced the pig theme, made me feel thinner and worthy pigging out on thousands of calories in Maialino.

Further investigation though does not list Botero as one of the artists rotated in and out of the lobby. http://www.gramercyparkhotel.com/artwork.html
Any LL reader know this painting and who did it?

each next pic is entrance to Maialino's, note little pig holding business cards
Our restaurant week lunch can cost 24.07.
However, ours always is more due to the addition of wine and sometimes coffee which is usually a request from me.

Our waiter, Jeremy, was quite adorable, charming, knowledgeable, devoted to our questions and to our dining pleasure. He blended all with a mischievous sense of fun. He explained, recommended and guided us through a savory, colorful, luscious meal. And we had a great backdrop, lots of wine lining the walls.

see next pic-our appetizer- Carciofini Fritti-Anchovy bread Sauce (in small dish to the left) and fried artichokes
next- entree Malfatti al Maialino- suckling pig ragu and arugula

and we scoffed down the desserts with such relish that none were intact long enough for a shot.

Jeremy even suggested we have a pot of French pressed coffee which was divine. He is a musician actor -a man of many talents. We offered to see him perform and call ourselves "discreet older people"

We left with gift certs for a future breakfast; yes, this restaurant wants you there all day for every meal. We used the facilities on the way out, next shot vestibule leading to restrooms

At Penn Station, I stopped to buy my Starbucks for the ride home. In this Starbucks they ask for your name and write it on the cup, a practice I support as I love being recognized. A Leo trait.
I have been Grace and Kara; today I might be Charlotte or Paulina (since I am ordering our Polish Diva's favorite drink). I explain to the woman in front of me what fun I have changing my identity, but when asked I blurt out Carol. Damn. I have to be myself.

I fight my way to my train through the rush hour crowds who never walk straight to the train they all converge on angles. Why is no rider ever right in front of their train hole? They are always off to either side and must rush to the entrance horizontally instead of linearly. I was spun about several times until a grabbed a pole to steady myself. No pole dancing.

Liam waited at home. Enjoying his water, lamb and brown rice pellets.
Liam has gained 1/2 pound which on his little body equals about 10 pounds on a bigger dog. Believe me, I understand.
We have been calling him sausage dog, but now I might call him my Maialino.

Liam better start chasing some squirrels, instead of listening to the chirping birds. The doxie/beagle half might be gaining on the Irish setter/Dalmatian half.

Woof, Woof, or oink oink
