In the snowiest January EVER-Liam escapes

LIAM WATCHING SQUIRRELS IN THE FRONT OF OUR HOUSE
Liam and I are outside in the snow. At home in New Hyde Park. He is chasing squirrels.   He prefers those in the front yard as they just hang out eating nuts in full view from our front windows.  Sort of taunting. Right now he is settling for those in the backyard trees.  I am doing some snow cleanup, poop pickup, recyclable transfers-inside can to outside can, ice melt sprinkling.  Liam has gone around the corner of the house out of my field of vision. About 5 minutes pass, then I hear the barking.  Distant but familiar.  Liam. How? His voice should be closer and not so insistent.  Quick check of the backyard -no Liam.   More barking.  I go out to the front, noting as I go that the driveway fence gate is closed.  I also glance up at the front door-also shut, both our new storm door and interior door forming a double barrier.  I reach the front of the driveway and turn towards the direction of the barking.  There he is, out front, off leash, barking, playing,  free, sniffing, burrowing into the tunnels the squirrels have made,
LIAM OUT FRONT
Greeting the school kids as they trek home.   "Liam, come here." He does. Why I do not know,  he never comes when I call.  I usher him back into the fenced yard and continue my outdoor chores, puzzling over how he got out.

Another 5 minutes.  Again the persistent barking.  Our mail carrier is coming up the driveway, followed by Liam. How the heck?  Liam is out again.  What is going on?
I accept my mail and push Liam back in through the driveway gate, again.

He heads out to the back, using the perimeter of the yard as his preferred route.
RUNNING ALONG THE PERIMETER
By doing so, he is out of sight for a bit.
GOING BEHIND THE TREES

I follow, camera in hand, I always have it ready.  He pops out on the side of the house and his actions proceed to reveal how he has been escaping.
LIAM SURFACING AT THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE
The snow on this side of the house is now the same height as the fence. This must have just occurred with the last storm.  Our neighbor has been adding his excess snow to ours and now we have a mountain.   A mountain that is but a short climb for a curious dog intent on chasing squirrels in the front yard. I document Liam's escape.
CLIMBING UP
NEARING THE PINNACLE
MADE IT TO THE TOP
I meet him at the front and he willingly comes with me. Squirrel-less.

We call our shovelers.  We have to move this mountain away from the fence.  For $30 Liam's winter wooferland is demolished.  He returns to find level ground.
MOUNTAIN GONE
He tries to reach the top but no success.
WHERE IS IT?
Maybe next storm.

Mesa Grill in the Winter Chill

Restaurant Week!  What about me?
Restaurant Week 2011
Jan 24-Feb 6-lunch $24.07

We have to try to get to "the city." That would be Manhattan which is what New Yorkers call the island off Long Island.
Every time we have tried to do something winter's whimsy has whacked us- snow, wind, sleet, hail, drifts, unplowed streets, canceled trains, thundersnow, lightning, power failures, downed trees.....

It is Winter Restaurant Week in NYC and we need a pick me up. Our choice:
Mesa Grill.  Bobby Flay's signature restaurant. http://www.mesagrill.com/new-york-city-restaurant/
A New York boy who is a Food Network Iron Chef, has books, products, TV shows.   He brings heat-meaning he cooks Southwestern with chilies, peppers, curry all that-read about him

Bobby Flay

Our winter apparel will protect us from the chill outside.
Maybe Bobby's lunch can heat us from inside.  Bring it on!
My train 11:39 AM to Penn
I leave in a snowstorm.  They are calling it a snow shower-that is when they do not want to commit to saying snowstorm.
I have figured a way to stay underground as long as possible by taking the LIRR to Penn, then subway #1 to Times Square, the S to Grand Central, then the #5 down to Union Square.  I never surface till the train pulls into Union Square and 14th Street. I am at Mesa Grill after a short walk through Union Square Park.  Not tricked this time by that hypotenusing Broadway.  Staying underground was key.
I check in.  I am first.  The place is buzzing with young suits, making business connections.
I text my fellow diners,  they are about a half hour away.   I take out my Kindle Life is good.

Everyone arrives.  So nice to meet, sit, toast, roast, laugh, and enjoy Bobby's food.   It does warm us from the inside. And he has picked a wine for us, a Shiraz
Mesa Grill Wine
Lunch-what we picked

Roasted Cauliflower Soup with poblano chiles, goat cheese+blue corn tortilla

No longer a Leo?

Liam, No longer a Leo?
A report came out last week from the Minnesota Planetarium Society that declared that the Zodiac signs would be altered.   Some Leos were no longer Leos and some Virgos were now Leos.   I mention those two signs because they were most vociferous in objecting to this announcement.

LEO

The Lion-King of the Jungle-Proud
Liam, King of the den
LEOs often choose work that puts them in the spotlight.  They are warm of spirit, eager for action and magnanimous leaders.
Liam the Leo, ready for action
Playful and loving Leo Liam
Liam, in his lion/cat like position
Their greatest strength is their playful and loving nature. Always the center of attention-a real ham of a big cat. There is so much more, but only Leos will continue reading about the passion, energy, creativity, brightness, initiative and action associated with this fire sign.

Why the change?
The Constellations have moved.  The moon's gravitational pull on earth has caused the alignment of the stars to be pushed by about a month.
The new Zodiac (if you choose to switch) is

Capricorn: Jan. 20-Feb. 16.
Aquarius:
Feb. 16-March 11.
Pisces:
March 11-April 18.
Aries:
April 18-May 13.
Taurus:
May 13-June 21.
Gemini:
June 21-July 20.
Cancer:
July 20-Aug. 10.
Leo:
Aug. 10-Sept. 16.
Virgo: Sept. 16-Oct. 30.
Libra:
Oct. 30-Nov. 23.
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29.
Ophiuchus:
Nov. 29-Dec. 17.
Sagittarius: Dec. 17-Jan. 20.

But do not fear.  No one is changing.  At least no one I know.  The Western Astrology strictly adheres to the tropical Zodiac, which is fixed to the seasons.  The sidereal Zodiac, observed in the East, is the one affixed to the constellations and that is the one that would change.

Many of my closest friends and family are Virgos.  Liam and I are quite amused at their collective horror at being Leos.   Some August Virgos have had to endure having the green birthstone Peridot.  Now this.

And a final word from one of my favorite columnists, USA Today's, Craig Wilson  (who also mentions a Virgo friend) -link to read follows.  He poses the thought about what would be used as a new pickup line -"Bet you used to be a Scorpio...?"

Some comments from friends about this new Zodiac.

What!!! Leo stops on August 21st - I am a Virgo - although
my Venus is in Leo. And you are the epitome of a Leo.
Don't believe everything you read.
My astrology books go way back.
Even without Pluto - you are a Leo.

And, just as a leopard cannot change his spots,
a LEO cannot stop being a lion
...ABSURD!!  Off with their heads!

I am staying a Virgo, could never be a Leo.

A Cougar No More

Liam howling with happiness
Entrance to the Columbarium at Arlington
My mother somehow wangled a way for her and my father to be inurned in Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium after their deaths.  If you agree to be cremated and have served honorably in the military, you too may reside here forever.  Spouse gets in also.
http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/columb.htm
That would be THE Arlington cemetery with the eternal fame and lots of famous folks, rich history and millions of visitors. Arlington, VA. is like Queens is to Manhattan.  Across the river, but walkable from DC.

So Charlie went first in 1997. Ruth followed this past spring.  Right before our summer visit in August 2010, we received a notice from Arlington that Ruth's name had been included on the marble plaque on the niche which housed their cremated  remains.   It had not occurred to me that it had not yet been done, but It seemed like perfect timing.

Well, you might remember that there was a mistake on the plaque. It was a big one.   And I knew something was up when a black butterfly began stalking me on my way to pay my respects.  Psychics say that black butterflies are signs from our loved ones.   They show up for them. Yes, an incorrect date. Ruth appeared to have been a cradle robber. Her date of birth engraved as 1913, should be 1923.   Charlie's is 1921.
Incorrect date 1913 on plaque on their niche-
So there it was for all to see,   Ruth married a younger man-8 years-fits the definition of the Cougar age gap. cougar info- http://womensissues.about.com/od/startingover/f/FAQCougar.htm

But not true.   I  imagined I heard my father laughing.  Back in the day, a lot of women married younger men and lied about it. Was not yet okay, like it is today.  The truth usually came out when the wife applied for Social Security benefits.  By then the hubby had figured it out and was happy to get money earlier than originally expected.

Ruth was born on New Year's Day 1923.  She did not like that as she alleged that no one was glad to have to say Happy New Year and Happy Birthday.  Sharing a birthday with a holiday is not so easy.  The last time we spoke for real was on her birthday last year on 1/1/10.  Our subsequent conversations were a little off as she was struggling to hide some mini strokes.

I think she would have liked the numbers in her birthday this year-1/1/11.

Good news.  My niece visited the Arlington Columbarium on New Year's Day-1/1/11, armed with my instructions to check for the corrected date. She photographed their marble niche plaque.   Oh Happy Day!    Guess What!  It has been corrected

Blizzard bits

Are the plows here yet?
We had a blizzard starting Sunday, December 26 and ending Monday, December 27, 2010.   It came suddenly it seems.  There were storms in California, houses falling off hills, mudslides. Then there was a White Christmas in the South. And while we in the Northeast were celebrating Christmas Day, reports of an impending storm came through hourly. By Christmas night, folks were scrambling to get home, buy supplies, change plans, cancel events.  Our storm was going to be a blizzard, qualifying with wind at a consistent rate for several hours.

We awoke Sunday morning expecting to see flakes furiously fighting to land.  Nothing.   I decided to head off to the gym, thinking of getting a workout before this supposed blizzard.  Paul announced that the cars were in place and not to be moved.   In suburbia, you pull your cars into wagon train formation in the driveway- protecting the driveway from snow accumulation.  The carless street allows the snow plow to scrape as close to the curb as it can. We live in Nassau so our streets get plowed.  Those who do not do the pre-storm car maneuver suffer shunning from the neighbors after the storm.
I did not go to the gym, I was actually too full of Christmas dinner-.perogies, kielbasa and roast pork to shift into exercise mode.  And then it began snowing
after a few minutes of the blizzard

Food Supplies
On Sundays, Paul goes to King Kullen to get rolls, then to Starbucks for my latte and his sweet treat.  He is known in Starbucks as Carol's husband.  This pleases me immensely.  That is an evolution from hubby of grande non-fat latte girl.    He returns too quickly.  "The King Kullen line is out the door, around the block.  People have non-staples in  their carts."   "What do these fools have in their carts?" I ask.  "Potato chips. Beer. Dip."     Now I am afraid.   What did he get for provisions?  He proudly announces that  he has purchased 6 chicken meatballs from the Italian deli.     And what else?  "That's it."   THAT'S IT!!!!
Who even heard of chicken meatballs!!!!!!!!!!!

So we have no treats.   My idea of nourishment during a blizzard is everything a cardiologist would abhor.   Chips, cheese, anything with mayo, dips- woo hoo.   Not Paul's.  Then another scary question posed.  You won't be drinking wine will you?   I know this trick of the "negative leading question"  You naturally feel compelled to say "no"  you are led to the "no"
I am supposed to reply "Me, drink wine, during a blizzard, of course not!!!

I guess our wine supplies are low.  It is the day after Christmas.
Water and dry food, no wine or chips
Liam is fine with food and drink
Liam's Kong with cheese treat inside
he also needs no TV, Internet, or blackberry

We got through the Sunday part of the blizzard with the chicken meatballs, some wine and spaghetti while the rest of the world gorges on leftover Christmas goodies and food gifts and snacks  purchased in supermarkets on blizzard day.   We (healthy eaters)  do not do such masochistic things.

Cablevision -Not
Liam checking on the blizzard
Monday dawned with snow still whirling. I am downstairs in the den with Liam.  Paul upstairs.   Yes, you all know we sleep separately, since I do not sleep easily, and Paul sleeps noisily.  Liam sleeps anywhere and everywhere but his love of heat dictates with whom he ends up.   He divides his time between us.  Summers in the hot unairconditioned upstairs with Paul. With the first blast of heat from the hot air vents he is back with me. In my fitful sleep wake-ups during the night I always look up at the cable box (is that the name?)  to check the time.  No time displayed this Sunday morning. The TV was dead.   No land line either (who cares)   But that also meant no Computer, no Internet access.  Cut off from the Cablevision world.   I have my blackberry, so I am connected by AT&T.   But Paul will be in trouble when he realizes.   No newspapers, no TV and we are hours away from taking cars out.   I break the news when he comes downstairs.  I knew what is coming.  No TV.  Then shoveling must commence.

Shoveling
We do not agree on this task.  I want to wait for groups of entrepreneurial folks with shovels to arrive and pay them.   Paul immediately wants to join the other men of the block (all candidates for stents or multiple bypass) and shovel. Some sort of male bonding or bromance.  He suits up in dusty Eddie Bauer gear. The shovel he picks looks like one used for grave digging- it actually has a point, a wooden handle  and weighs about 50 pounds.
No snow blower here.
I wait, then join in.
Liam shovels, using his tongue- see pix following

our snow measures 22 inches

Yummy, wet and cold
clearing a path

We finish.
The shovelers for hire show up soon after.

Kindle Revealed
Carol's Kindle in green case
Open Kindle
Paul is strictly a newspaper, TV, radio guy.  His cell phone is turned off except for emergencies.  Guess that would be an expected emergency. No TV for news-Cablevision knows there is an outage.  I announce the news as it comes in on my blackberry via tweets, FB posts and texts and emails.   I then bring out my secret Kindle   I have access to tons of reading material.  Why has the Kindle been  kept secret?  Paul does not like any gadgets. I knew not to say I was buying a Kindle- I would have heard  the question "Do you need that?"
Yes.  My eye doctor recommended it.   He says I would not need my prescription changed as I could just make the font bigger.   Big Savings in  the long run. And I have the advanced Kindle- no Wi Fi necessary.
Paul accepts it, weakened from the shoveling and asks me to find him the Sunday sports.  I do.

Liam back left swimming through the fluffy snow
But the blackberry and Kindle do not have access to lattes.  I know I want one.  I suggest we walk with Liam to Starbucks.   Paul thinks it is too cold for Liam to be walking,  I disagree.   Liam leaps, run,
Liam running
rolls, dig in the snow
Liam digging
He can do it.
We walk, quite challenging and here we are

Starbucks Monday Dec 27 2010
Blizzard lessons learned
  • Do  not allow Paul to blizzard shop alone
  • Ensure that wine and Sam Adams are in the house
  • NEVER  shovel again.  Pay someone to do it.

And we are expecting more snow Friday, 1/7/11.  Not sure if the outer boroughs (those would be those frontier type places like Queens) are shoveled yet.  Mayor Mike does not like whining.
No whining here.
Just wine.

Liam is out for a stroll in the backyard.  Thinking.   No worries of shoveling, snacks, Internet, Kindles. So he  reflects. He knows that NYC suffered.   Their streets not plowed for days, some still just have room for one car at a time.  Now mountains of black garbage bags have replaced the snow or are on top of the snow.  People could not get to work, or to their doctors. Paws are now being pointed-fault must be found and blame assigned.
A reflective Liam on a stroll one week after blizzard

Liam says
"Don't fix the blame, fix the problem."
Another chance tomorrow.
Work as a pack.
Mayor Mike could be the Pack leader.
